"He went on to explain the ancient Greek concept of areté, or excellence: they believed that in being our best, we draw closer to the divine. Our offerings should not only be our best food, wine, art, architecture, etc., but our best selves. And while I was inclined to push myself well before I ever learned of areté, its importance to my gods is definitely one of the reasons I continue to do so. When I stand in awe in Their presence, my greatest wish is to give Them something worthy, and the biggest thing I can personally give Them is myself. So I must craft my life into something beautiful for the gods; and I must make myself into a substantial sacrifice that will satisfy the hunger of my spirits, for those I serve are indeed voracious."
